Timing Belt Replacement
Timing belts are used in engines with overhead cams, and are required to keep the overhead cams turning at the right time and are necessary to keep the engine running. A timing belt must be carefully calibrated to move in time with the motion of the crankshaft. Since it is the timing belt that controls the camshafts in your car`s engine and maintains smooth engine performance. As such, timing belt replacement is part of regular maintenance to ensure that your vehicle is functioning at its best.
The benefit of designing cars with a timing belt or chain instead of direct gear drive allows the manufactures to install the camshaft(s) further from the crankshaft. Timing belts tend to be weigh less, are more economical, and quieter to operate, although, timing chains are generally more durable than timing belts.
A failure in the timing belt will force the engine to suddenly stop. Without a timing belt, your car can not run and you will not be able to get it started again until the belt is replaced and perform the necessary repairs for the event of the pistons colliding with the valves. A cracked timing belt is a big deal of a problem waiting to happen.
Alin Marinescu at Eurotekk recommends the timing belt replacement service every 60,000 to 75,000 miles (97,000 to 121,000km). However, some more durable belts are designed to last up to 100,000 miles before requiring a change. Still, even if the recommended mileage point has not been exceeded, it is always better to replace your timing belt before it becomes a problem. Timing belt replacement is a good example of easy preventative maintenance. Even a timing belt with low mileage car has to be replaced if the car has been sitting in a garage for a few years. The reason is the age of the timing belt.
Different car manufacturers design their motor layouts in unique configurations. Engines are broadly designated into two types: “interference” and “non-interference.” In an interference engine there is a limited amount of space between the valves and pistons. A non-interference engine will generally be designed with more space for the valves and pistons. A timing belt failure would be more serious in a interference engine where a breakdown may lead to the pistons damaging the nearby valves.
This does not mean that timing belts can be neglected in vehicles with non-interference engines. The best care for your car is to have routine timing belt replacement, both for safety and performance.
